Filming notes:

Day1: Filming started off at my house filming the scene where Matt is playing Xbox and packs his bag and leaves to head of to Cornwall. Quality of footage is good along with sound. Did not come across any problems when filming today.

Day2: Started and finished filming the two scenes of Matt at his house in Cornwall and of him kayaking and swimming in the Creek. Audio and visual footage looked good through playback. No problems occurred today.

Day3: Finished filming my drama today. The location was down at New quay beach. The beach was almost empty making filming an easier task for me and making the shots look more professional. I had one problem when filming today which was that the wind was so strong that it ruined any chance of the camera's audio being heard. This doesn't really matter though because I will be having a soundtrack playing through most of the one minute drama including this scene.

Treatment and shooting script for my 1 minute drama

Treatment

Blurb: A story about a boy who gets out of his house does more with his life.

Character biographies: Matt is the starring and only character in the one minute drama. Matt is shy and doesn’t socialise much making him very wary of leaving his house. He spends most of his time playing Xbox or watching T.V. He is 16 years old and has blonde hair and well-built for his age with an average height.

Storyline: It starts with Matt sitting in his room dark messy room playing Xbox as he does most days. However there is a suitcase on the floor with the unzipped which contains clothes, paper binoculars and a wetsuit.

The room suddenly goes bright when Seb, Matt’s brother turns on the light and says it’s time to go to Cornwall. Matt zips up his suitcase picks it up and leaves with his family to Cornwall. When Matt has settled in at his house in Cornwall and unpacked his suitcase he runs straight into the front Garden and dive bombs into the Ocean. After this he then goes kayaking.

It’s drawing to an end for Matt’s holiday in Cornwall and he decides to go to Newquay beach. He’s got a body board and his wetsuit on. He pulls out his paper binoculars and takes a look at the waves in the Ocean. Matt then sprints towards the ocean where he jumps in and starts body boarding.

Script

Scene 1:

The camera starts with an opening shot of Matt’s room. The camera starts panning across Matt’s room showing the mess on his floor (used socks, clothes and general mess on the floor) the camera stops panning when it reaches the shot of matt hunched over his Xbox playing a video game. (Matt will show the viewers that he is completely absorbed with playing the video game and doesn’t notice anything around him) Note that the room will be dark (curtains closed and lights off apart from a small lamp)

The camera will still be aimed at Matt when the room goes bright. (Off screen Seb will open the door and switch the main lights for the bedroom). Matt will turn around and face the camera with curious look on his face to show that he is wondering why Seb has entered the room and to give the audience the feeling that Seb is on the other side of the camera.

Seb: It’s time to go to Cornwall Matt! Come on.

Matt: Yeah il be down in a minute.

The camera is still aimed at Matt sitting in front of his Xbox. (You here the door shut as Seb leaves the room). Matt will then stand up and switch off his Xbox and walk over and crouch next to his suitcase. The camera will pan across following Matt as he does this. Matt will take his time zipping his suitcase shut so that the audience get enough time to see the wetsuit and binoculars in his suitcase.

Matt will then stand up and haul his suitcase with him across the room and through the door (Camera will be on tripod and will continue panning/ following him across to the door). When Matt gets his suitcase through the door he will poke his head back through the door and switch off the light and close the door leaving the room in complete darkness. This will be the cue for the camera to cut and stop recording.

Scene 2:

When the opening shot for this scene starts, the music will also start playing which will play right through to the end of the script. In this scene most of the camerawork will be a montage to show as much as possible of what Matt is doing on holiday in less than a minute. The opening shot will show Matt with swimming shorts on leaning over his suitcase in his room in Cornwall; all of his clothes are neatly stored around him in his room giving the audience the impression that he has just unpacked his suitcase.

Matt pulls out his binoculars from the empty suitcase and places them on his bed, where he then sprints out of his door to give the audience the impression that he is excited and in a hurry to do something. The camera will pan/ follow him has he does this. (Note also that the room will brightly light because his blindfolds are up and its daylight to give off a positive vibe to the audience)

The camera is now positioned in the front garden of the house where it pans following Matt sprinting across the grass in the garden to the edge of the garden which is where the Ocean is. Matt will reach the end of the land and dive bomb into the water making a whooping noise to show the audience that he is enjoying himself. The camera will stop recording when matt resurfaces from underneath the water after doing his dive bomb.

The next opening shot will show Matt sitting in a Kayak with a life jacket on and paddle. The Kayak will be on the water near to where the land is so that the camera can pick up the kayak easily with detail and also without showing the land in the shot. Matt will be Kayaking around while smiling ( to give the audience the feeling of a positive vibe)

Scene 3:

The opening shot will be of Matt walking on to Newquay beach smiling. The camera shot will be a medium shot so we can see Matt holding the paper binoculars. Matt will be wearing a wetsuit at this time and have a body board next to him. Matt will put the binoculars to his eyes and look at the ocean through them.  The camera shot will then change to a zoom in to the waves breaking on the Ocean (this will give the audience the feeling that this is what Matt is seeing through his paper binoculars).

The camera shot will then change back to a medium shot of Matt showing him taking the paper binoculars away from his eyes and putting them down on the beach. He will then pick up the body board resting by the side of him and start jogging excitedly towards Ocean. The camera will follow him doing this in a panning motion.

The last few shots will be a variety of medium shots, long shots and close/ close up shots of Matt body boarding in the waves of the ocean. (It is hard to say which camera angles will work best for this because we do not know how big the waves will be) This would signal the end of the short story and the screen would fade to black. The music will also fade out to stop playing exactly at the same time the screen goes black.

Location Plans

Location one: My house in West Wycombe. This is the location where we will be shooting all of scene one. The filming will all take place in my room because it is the most suitable location to use for this scene. I have all the required lighting and equipment to be able to film here.

Location two: My house in Cornwall. This is the location for the shooting of all of scene two. Some of the filming will take place in my room but the majority of the filming of this scene will be done in our garden which is joined to the sea. Transport has been arranged for getting to this location. The filming in the garden will be done in daytime.

Location three: New quay beach (near Cornwall). This is the location for filming the final scene, scene three. It is the most suitable filming location for scene three because of the fact that I need to get footage of Matt body boarding. Transport has been arranged to get to this location and back. The filming will take place during daytime.

Paper binoculars:

The paper binoculars were compulsory for me to use but I have made good use of them throughout my short film for scenes such as where Matt is looking out to sea using them.

Body board:

The body board is a vital prop for my production because this is what Matt uses when he goes out to sea, body boarding in Newquay.

Xbox 360 Elite:

This Xbox console plays a small role in the beginning of my one minute story where Matt is in his dark bedroom playing Xbox. In my film I represent the Xbox as an antisocial device.

Kayak:

This Kayak is used briefly in the second scene where the camera is doing the montage of what Matt does a in a week, and some of the footage shows Matt on a Kayak paddling around.

Costumes:

Wetsuit:

This Costume is used in two scenes of my short story, the first scene is where Matt is zipping his suitcase shut you see the wetsuit in his suitcase. The second scene is where Matt goes to Newquay and goes out on the ocean body boarding wearing the wetsuit.

Locations:

West Wycombe, My family’s house, my room: Photo unavailable. This location is used because it is the best layout for Matt to be because I require a typical boy’s messy room which is what makes my room perfect for shooting the footage in.

Cornwall, My family’s house: Photo unavailable. This is a good location to use for my filming in scene two because the sea is right next to our house which makes it perfect for the scene where Matt runs out the house and dive-bombs into the sea. It is also where the Kayak is stored which we also use for this scene.

Newquay beach: I chose this location for scene three because I know from personal experience that this is one of the best surf, body board locations to go to in England which is why I felt it would be great for capturing Matt body boarding in my last scene.

Filming Schedule

It is required that Sebastian Wheeler and Alexander Goodall read the filming schedule to know when you are required for filming and what time you will expected to arrive. I will have scripts ready for you on the days that you are being filmed. Props will also be prepared by me ready for your use. Health and safety

Dangers	How these dangers can be avoided
Allot of the filming is being done in water, after looking at the weather forecast it will be extremely cold if precautions are not used when filming actors in the water.	1: Wear a wetsuit. 2: Wear a life jacket. 3: When filming scenes with actors in the water do filming for five to ten minute periods then take a break so that the actors do not get uncomfortably cold.
Damage to equipment	1: When filming scenes in the water keep equipment that is being used dry perhaps wrap a plastic bag around the equipment to avoid getting it wet. 2: Use camera straps when holding the camera to avoid it falling and being damaged. 3: Keep equipment stored in bags to avoid losing any equipment and possibly damaging any equipment.

Reserach

I must find films and compare them and talk about how they are similar to the same motto as my short film. My motto is journey.

Lord of the rings trilogy

I have chosen this as one of my films that I feel is similar to my short film because it is the same motto as mine in many ways. People may think that lord of the rings is all about fighting and heroship. But in fact there is a journey to it. This journey is with Frodo and Sam who are hobbits that lived a peaceful life in the shire which they had never left the entire time they had been alive so far.

Their journey begins when they are told to take the ring to mount doom which involves them traveling into lands they never have stepped foot in or even knew existed. This is similar to my film because My charcter "Matt" doesnt go out, he just plays xbox. However one day he decides hel go out of his comfort zone and try something new. This is exactly what the hobits feel as they leave theire home town on the way to mount doom.

 The inbetweeners movie

This movie also has a very strong link wih my film because if you have followed the TV shows of the inbetweeners then you will know that Will, Simon, Neil and Jay have never been on holiday abroad just to go clubbing and boozing, which is a common thing people do at that age. But in the movie they all decide to give it ago, You can tell they are out of theire comfort zone about this when you watch the movie, but yet they still do it.

This links strongly to my short film as before because of the characters going out of their comfort zone and doing something new which is exactly what Matt does in my film.



Treatment for my short story and script for my short story

Blurb: A story of trust between two boys.

Character bigraphies:
Seb: Is the main character. He is 16 and is an average boy at that age who goes to college and is with frinds when not busy. He is a caring person which is the main aspect of him shown in this story when his friends take John's binoculars.

John: Is also a joint main charcter because he plays an important tole in the story. John is 16 too and also attends the same college as Seb. How ever he doesnt talk to Seb because they have different personalities and groups of friends. He has a shy personality and has confidence problems.

Jones & Garry: Jones and Garry play a very small role in the short story. They are Sebs friends, they can be nice most times, but sometimes they overstep boundries like they do in this short story.

Storyline: We start in the park where we see Seb, Jones and Garry having a kickabout on the grass. We then see John on his own playing with some paper binoculars. Seb walks over to John and makes conversation and has ago with using his binoculars after asking and saying that he wont do anything to them.

However Jones and Garry then come over and they put Seb in an awkward position when they snatch Johns binoculars from Seb and tell him to follow them as they they run off luaghing. Seb follows feeling embarrased and guilty about what happened leaving John on his own looking upset.

When Garry, Jones and Seb stop running Jones and Garry starting talking about destroying the binocuilars for a luagh. Seb steps in at this point and tells them both to grow up and he walks away from them while they shout insults after him.

Seb heads back to where John is standing and hands him the binoculars and apologises, John smiles and accepts. They both walk out of the park after this talking to eachother.

Script:

Camera starts with a two shot of Garry and Jones playing football, Seb then walks into the shot and joins in. Camera then pans sideways to the rigt where it shows John on his own looking around him through his paper binoculars.

The next shot shows John still using his binoculars but he then lowers them and smiles as Seb walks into the shot.

Seb: Heyy, dont I know you from college right?
John: Yeah were in the same lesson for A level art.
Seb: thats right! its been almost a year and I havent spoken to you properly in college or oustide college, how is that?
John: You always seem busy when i do try to make conversation with you but I dont mind.
Seb: (looking emabarrased) Oh, I didnt know you live near here?
John: yeah I live two blocks down from here.
Seb: Nice one, oh cool binoculars bro, can I have a try?
John: (facial expressions show that hes considering what to say) well...
Seb: I promise I wont do anything with them, trust me.
John: (Facial expression shows him smile) ok then
(John hands Seb the binoculars where he start using them to look around)
Seb: Hey guys (as Jones and Garry walk over  smiling)
Jones: nices binoculars man (snatching them and chucing them to Garry)
John: (facial expression shows him looking worries) come on now guys...
Garry: Quick Seb run.. (As him and Jones run off laughing about what they had done)
Seb look emabarrased and guilt in his face so he turns away from John and runs after Garry and Jones
Garry: Ha ha did you see the look on his face (after they had stopped running)
Seb: His names John...
Jones: Alright mate, calm down... anway shall we go throw it in the river and tell him, I bet hel cry.
Seb: ( snatches the binoculars) Dont be dicks guys, what you did you just then was harsh, Im going home see you later. (sounded fustarted and angry in his facial expression and the way he speaks)

My stories for the paper binoculars

Story 1:

An old man bought the binoculars from the 99p store.

He bought the binoculars a few years back roughly between 2000- 2004 because the binoculars look a lot different and fragile compared to the cheap binoculars that are made these days.

He then took them home with him where he used them to spy on what his neighbours were up to. I do not know where the old man lived but he probably lives reasonably close to where the shop that sold the binoculars was if that helps.

The binoculars which were being used to spy on the old man’s neighbours was short lived because the old man threw the binoculars out of his window when he realised how difficult it was to see out of the binoculars. This would explain why the binoculars looked so ragged and misshaped when I saw them in the lesson.

Story 2:

I am in the park with two friends playing football, when I notice a younger aged boy playing with some binoculars; I know the boy but don’t talk with him much because I don’t know him well enough.

I go up to the boy and make conversation for a while. After a while I ask if I can borrow the boy’s binoculars. He looks unsure at first but then I tell him that he can trust me to look after them. He then hands them over to me with a satisfied smile on his face thinking ill look after them as I promised.

I played with the binoculars for a while and then my other two friends came over and asked to have a quick go with them. As soon as I did this they grinned and ran off with the little boys binoculars laughing at him. I looked back at the little boy’s face which showed the emotions of being upset and betrayed. I was too embarrassed to say anything to him so I ran after my mates.

Once my two mates were a distance away from the little kid they sat down and started laughing about what they had done. I sat down too but said nothing feeling bad inside because I had betrayed that boys trust. My two mates then talked about throwing it in the lake so at this point I snatched it off them and told them to grow up, I then started walking away towards where the younger boy had been playing with his binoculars. My mates shouted abuse at me as I walked away but I just ignored them.

When I got closer I could see the younger boy I walked towards him, he had an empty look in his face. When I got within in speaking distance, I said to him that I was sorry about what my friends had done and I handed him back his binoculars. He smiled and accepted my apology. I then asked the boy if I could join in. He grinned and said yes. We’ve been good friends since that day.

I like this story the most because the object (binoculars) is the moral of the story which is “never betray someone’s trust”.

Story 3

Starts with a dark building where a kid is making a paper binocular which he then has to put inside a Christmas cracker that he also makes. By this point the audience will realise that the kid is working in a factory somewhere paid underage most likely because the kid is dressed in clothes that are torn and dirty. It is Christmas Eve and the kid has to meet a quota before he can go home.

Then we follow the Christmas cracker which is packaged with 11 other Christmas crackers in a box as it is transported from the factory to a supermarket in High Wycombe. I pick the box of Christmas crackers up in the morning on Christmas day and bring them home where I lay them out on the table with the turkey and Christmas pudding and other festive food.

We have a lot of our family and relatives around for Christmas lunch this year. When we have eaten we then pull the crackers. I pull mine with my 6 year old cousin. He wins and pulls out the binoculars where his smile widens and he spends a long twenty minutes playing with them.

We all then open our main Christmas presents. My little cousin gets a Lego set and immediately drops the binoculars and starts playing with his Lego. The binoculars were never used again.

This story shows stories inside it using the binoculars like how the kid was suffering and making these toys to live and on the receiving end we were sitting at home eating roast turkey and playing with toys from inside of the crackers

The other story is that the kid put so much effort into making the toy and when my cousin got it  he was thrilled but then he ditched it as soon as he got his main presents.
