Five minute film about bullying

Mood board on Chosen Topic for 5 minute drama "Bullying"

Research into similar film to the plot of our 5 minute drama on bullying

Kidult hood

I can easily relate kidult hood to our 5 minute drama because they have the similar plots to ours. The key things I looked into when researching Kidult hood were how they used their camera angles and editing techniques.

Because in our film we have particular scene where Zoe tells James that she’s pregnant and James reacts horridly I wanted to look into films that had similar situations and how they used the camera angles and editing techniques to portray it.

I find the opening shot in the playground very useful. When the girls (who are bullied) are standing in the playground the camera is doing cross cuts from close-ups of their worried faces to the people who are bullying them who are jeering at the girls at the time. This will help me with the scene where everyone finds out that Zoe is pregnant and start staring and laughing at her.

I found that throughout the film when a scene gets personal such as Sam confronting his girlfriend to find out if she has been cheating on him he starts getting violent. To emphasise this, the camera also zooms in to a medium/ close up shot of them both arguing occasionally changing from a two shot to a cross cut between each character.

Treatment

Blurb: A story about how one sentence can turn somebody’s life around.
Character biographies:
Zoe: 17, female, attend Henley College.
Alex: 17, male, attend Henley College.
Dan: 17, male, attend Henley College.
James: 17, male, attend Henley College.

Story line:
The story starts with the morning of a college day; everyone is arriving and heading to their first lessons. We follow Zoe just as she goes into her lesson room. It’s still early so the teacher isn’t there yet giving the class an opportunity to talk and gossip to each other. Zoe goes in and sits down with her close group of friends, Alex and Dan. Where they talk about normal things such as what was going on in the weekend and what was on TV last night.
James then walks into the room. He is going out with Zoe at the moment. He starts heading to his seat with a different crowd of friends than Zoe’s. As soon Zoe see’s James enter the room her positive attitude she had disappears and is replaces with a nervous shifty look. She looks at James who suddenly turns hid face to hers which makes Zoe look away back to her friends. The teacher then walks in.
When lessons are over Zoe grabs James as he’s about to walk past and explains to him that she needs to talk to him in private about something serious and that he should meet her outside R3 Block in 20 minutes. James grudgingly agrees and walks out the classroom door. Zoe also heads outside the room and heads to the back of R3 block. We watch Zoe nervously shifting around as she waits for James to turn up.
When James walks up he’s the first to talk. He tells Zoe that he doesn’t want the relationship between them to carry on any more. This causes Zoe to get very emotional and makes her shout out what she’s been trying to tell James all morning “I’m pregnant!” James stares at Zoe for 10-15 seconds in silence after she says this and then finally speaks saying that he thinks Zoe is bullshitting him and after that he says even if Zoe is pregnant it defiantly isn’t his. He walks away angrily not looking back at Zoe.
Zoe sits down looking like she’s about to burst out crying but has to resist doing this and instead puts on a brave face because Alex and Dan have spotted her and heading her way. They say to Zoe that their heading down into town to get something to eat and ask Zoe if she wants to join them.  Zoe agrees and follows them down into Henley. When they are in town sitting down on a bench eating and drinking Alex asks Zoe why she has been so quiet. Dan then  asks Zoe what’s wrong and why she looks so sad.
Zoe didn’t want anyone knowing she was pregnant, not even her friends so she kept quiet about that. She did tell Alex and Dan about James breaking up with her though to help mask what she was really upset about. Alex and Dan comforted telling her that they both thought James was a dick and what had happened was likely to happen and that it was better it had happened sooner than later.
When Zoe walked back into lessons she was almost back to normal until she opened the door to the class room and realised everyone was quiet and looking at her. This when Zoe noticed the white board which has all kinds of horrid language and pictures drawn on it, all relating to how Zoe was pregnant. About 5 seconds after Zoe had taken everything in on the white board nearly everyone was laughing at Zoe except Dan and Alex who stood a distance behind Zoe.
The teacher walked in and told the class to hush down. And saw the insulting language on the board and rubbed it off with a disapproving look on her face. Zoe sat down with Alex and Dan but could tell that even they were embarrassed to be with her. Alex and Dan had put more distance between themselves and Zoe and were not talking at all to her.
This is when Zoe got a ping on her phone which made her sigh with relief knowing she had something to do that could distract her from everything else for a minute. Her face changed to a shocked expression when she realised it was a group invitation to a group about Zoe and how she was pregnant. This was the last straw for Zoe as she picked up her bag and charged out of the lesson.

Zoe: hey guys.
Dan: Hi Zoe!
Alex:  Hey!
Zoe: What are you both talking about then?
Dan: The weekend! Where did you disappear too Saturday?
Zoe: Sorry, me and James left early and went back to mine; I think we both drank a bit too much.
Dan: Hmm, well he better of looked after you! We know what he is like.
Action: the camera will be aimed at Zoe, Dan and Alex showing them all having their conversation. The camera must have the door in shot as well this way we can capture Zoe’s expression as James walks through the door.
Zoe will look at James with a nervous expression on her face as he walks through the door. Zoe will keep looking at James until his eyes meet hers. Zoe will turn away from James when he looks at her. The camera will do a panning medium shot as it follows James as he walks over to his group of friends and sits down with them. Zoe will go back to watching James.
Dan: (tapping Zoe on the shoulder) Did you hear what I said?
Zoe: No sorry what did you say?
Alex: He asked you if James treated you alright that night.
Zoe: Yeah it was fine, stop being so negative about James; he’s not a dick like you all keep saying he is.
Action: The camera will pan across from doing a medium still shot of Zoe, Alex and Dan having their conversation and will travel to the door to show the teacher walking in and walking towards her desk and sitting at it.
Teacher: Alright people, settle down. Open your textbook on page 78 please.
Action: The shot of the teacher will black out to give the impression to the audience that the lesson has started. We will not film what goes on during the lesson.
Action: the opening shot will be a medium still shot of the teacher sitting behind her desk. This will give the impression to the audience that the lesson has just ended.
Teacher: Alright, before you leave make sure you save your work and IL see you this afternoon.
Action: The camera shot has now changed to a medium still shot of Zoe sitting at her chair. In the shot you can see people leaving the classroom including Alex and Dan. James will walk into the camera shot heading towards the door where Zoe will grab his arm.
Zoe: James, I need to talk to you about something urgent. Can you meet me outside R3 block in ten minutes?
James: (brushing Zoe’s hand of his arm) can’t you just tell me now. (He sounds irritated)
Zoe: No! I need to talk to you in private. (She sounds stressed because James isn’t being very cooperative)
James: ok ok, this better not be waste of time though, I was planning on meeting Ed.
Action: James turns away from Zoe and walks out the door. Zoe follows 5 seconds after James has walked out the door.
Action: The location has now changed from the classroom to the wooded area outside R3 block. The opening camera shot shows a still medium shot of Zoe sitting on the wall waiting for James to show up. She looks stressed out (if she wants Zoe could be smoking a cigarette to add the effect that she is stressed about something)
Action: The shot has now changed to a long shot of Zoe sitting down in the same spot still. She looks up (She has just spotted James arriving off screen). Zoe then stands up and starts walking towards where James is. The camera will do a panning long shot as it follows Vicky walk towards James. The camera will stop panning When Zoe and James meet each other halfway.
Action: The camera shot has now changed to a medium still shot of James and Zoe facing each other.
James: Ok, so what is this urgent news you have to tell me? (Sounding sarcastic)
Zoe: I’m pregnant.
James: Don’t joke, that’s not even funny.
Zoe: I’m not messing around with you, I really am pregnant. I can prove it from the pregnancy tests. And I…    (James cuts Zoe of mid-sentence)
James: You’re not fucking pregnant, and if you are then you must have been screwing someone behind my back because I used condoms. (His emotions are showing as angry and he is 100% in denial of being a father)
Zoe: James, condoms don’t always wo…  (James has cut Zoe of mid-sentence again)
James: I knew you were cheating on me you slut, and now you want to land me with some other guy’s baby. Go and beg some other man to be your baby’s father figure, I’m out of here.
Action: The still medium shot starts panning, following James as he walks away from Zoe who is trying to keep up with him. Zoe is clearly upset.
Zoe: James, you’ve got it all wrong in your head, just stop a min…
James: (laughing/ with angry emotion) your pathetic, wait till I tell Ed about this.
Action: The camera is still panning/ following Zoe as she follows after James. James is in the corner of the shot but disappears when he fastens his walking pace to get away from Zoe. The camera stops panning and becomes still medium shot of Zoe as she stops chasing after James.
Zoe: (yelling after James) please you mustn’t tell Ed, or anyone.
James: (yelling from off camera) fuck off.
Action: Zoe is still standing at the spot where she stopped chasing after James. The emotions on her face show that she is trying hard not to cry/ look upset. However her facial expression changes quickly to a faked smile as she spots Alex and Dan walking towards her.
Dan: We’ve been looking for you, why are you here.
Zoe: (lying) I needed a cigarette.
Alex: right, well were going to town for munch if you want to come.
Zoe: Yeah, sure IL come along with you guys.
Action: The opening shot for this sequence shows Zoe, Alex and Dan sitting down on a bench by the river at Henley on Thames. They are eating and drinking (is optional if any of them wish to smoke, would add to effect). Take note that Zoe is looking gloomy and his looking down at her shoes.
Dan: yeah I heard from people who went there last year that it wasn’t as good as the year before.
Alex: I don’t know about you, but I’m defiantly going to go to a different festival this summer.
Action: Dan who was facing Alex at the time from a conversation they had been having before the opening shot turns and faces Zoe sitting on his other side.
Dan: Zoe what’s wrong with you, and don’t tell me your fine because I can tell from your face that you’re not fine.
Zoe: (Zoe continues staring at her shoes for 3-5 seconds without saying anything. This gives the audience the impression that she is thinking of something to say.)
Me and James have split up.
Alex: why did this happen.
Zoe: I’m not that sure myself.
Dan: To be honest with you Zoe, I never liked James.
Alex:  Yeah, he was always a prick to me whenever I talked to him. He’s one of those vain guys who only think about themselves.
Zoe: Trust me I believe you now. He completely switched on me when I told him I wa…  (Zoe cuts off from what she’s saying when she realises she almost spoke about her pregnancy. She will look at the floor after she makes this mistake)
Alex: What were you saying Zoe?
Zoe: (looking back up) I forgot what I was going to say.
Dan: (standing up from the bench and looking back down at the other two) Come on we need to get to lesson.
Action: Zoe and Alex stand up and follow Dan out of the shot of a medium still shot which was directed at the bench.
Action: The opening shot for this sequence is a medium tracking/ panning shot of Zoe, Alex and Dan just outside the door of the classroom about to enter.
Dan: We aren’t late are we?
Alex: nah, were fine with time.
Action: After Alex has said this sentence, he and Dan enter the classroom. The camera stays aimed at Zoe with a medium still shot of her standing outside the door. She looks nervous and is hesitating about going into the classroom.  She puts her hand on the door handle and turns it as if she is about to open it.
Action: The camera angle has changed. The camera is now on the other side of the door doing a medium still shot of Zoe as she opens the door and enters. However Zoe stops once she has stepped a few feet into the classroom. She has a look of shock and horror on her face.
The camera angle then changes to a still medium shot of the whiteboard which is located in the classroom. There is all kind of abuse written on the whiteboard that relates to Zoe being pregnant.
The camera angle then changes again to an over the shoulder shot over Zoe’s shoulder showing all of the people in the classroom laughing and sniggering. And then a chant of “slut” being repeated breaks out.

Music: A music track will now be played because there is no more dialogue for large amount of time.
Action: The camera changes once again to a panning shout just outside the classroom that captures Zoe running back out the classroom looking very upset she carries on running through the double doors.
Action: The opening shot for this sequence shows Zoe sitting in a wooded area still looking very upset. She is lighting a spliff where we make a montage of filming her smoking the spliff using different camera angles.
Action: This shot is a medium still shot of Zoe with her head in her hands; she then lifts her head from her hands and then starts aggressively punching herself in the stomach where her baby would be. She does this for about 10 seconds then quickly stands up and pulls out her phone. The shot changes to a close up shot of the phone screen showing that Alex is calling Zoe, She presses the hang up button.
The camera angle changes back to the original medium still shot of Zoe as she gets up and walk out of the shot.
Music: Sound track now stops playing.
Action: an over the shoulder shot which follows a college student as he walks into the toilets. He opens the closest cubicle door he gasps in shock and cries out. The camera looks into the cubicle so you can see the legs dangling in mid-air (where Zoe has hung herself)
College student: Oh shit, I need help here. Someone call an ambulance.
Action: The camera will slowly start backing out of the toilets facing towards the cubicle where Zoe has hung herself. This will capture all the students running into the toilets and gathering round outside. Finally the camera will pan around when it reaches outside the toilets where it will show a close up shot of James’s face in complete shock.
The screen will then black out.

Storyboard for five minute production

SB1: This is the opening shot for the film, where Zoe walks through the door towards her classroom. This is a medium still shot facing towards Zoe to capture her walking through the double doors.

SB2: This is a bird’s eye view shot (still) of Zoe just after she has walked through the double doors and is almost at the door towards her classroom. We used the stairs above the classroom to film this angle shot.

SB3: This is an over the shoulder shot which is aimed over Zoe’s shoulder as she opens the door and enters. The reason behind this camera angle is to capture Zoe’s friends as they look towards her when she enters and greet her as she walks in to the room.

SB4: This is a still long shot of Zoe sitting down with her friends Dan and Alex (take note that other people who are in the class will be in the shot when we actually do shoot the production). The reason for the long shot is to capture everyone who is in the shot because at the time they are all in conversation, and the audience will need to see who is speaking to whom.

SB5: This is a panning medium shot (two person shot) that captures James as he walks through the door into the lesson. Zoe will be in the shot to the side so the camera captures her in the shot looking towards James. This will be a close up shot for Zoe but a medium shot for James all in the same shot.

SB6: This shot is also a medium panning shot that captures Elliot from where he left of in the SB above. The angle has changed to the other side of the room as it captures walking over to his chair (where his group of friends will be sitting).

SB7: This shot is taken very soon after SB6. This shot is a medium still shot which is aimed at James as he is sitting down (in real shot he will be talking to his friends). The shot will last for about five seconds. The reason for this shot is to give the impression to the audience that James is one of the role characters of the short film.

SB8: This shot is a panning (two shot) medium shot of the teacher has she enters her classroom. She will walk through the door and walk over to her desk where she will sit down to start the lesson.  Zoe will also be included in the beginning of this shot (she will be to the side of the camera with a close up shot of her and the teacher at the same time will be shown through a medium shot)

SB9: This shot is a medium shot of the teacher after she has just sat down at her desk. It will capture her telling the class to settle down and open their text books.  (Take note that the height of the shot will be taken from the same height as the desk, almost like a ground shot, and the camera will facing towards the teacher head on). The screen will then black out to give the audience the impression the lesson has started.

SB10: The screen is now becoming footage again from a black screen (this will give the impression to the audience that the lesson has just ended). The shot will be a medium still shot of the teacher at her desk from a side on angle telling the students in her lesson to remember about homework due in for next lesson.

SB11: This is a continuous shot from SB10 except the still medium shot starts slowly panning to the right (after the teacher has said her lines) to show students walking out of the door or towards the door.

SB12: This shot is taken from a high angle from the door of the classroom which is aimed at James as he walks towards the camera (door) when he walks past Zoe who is in the shot too (sitting down). Zoe will grab his arm to tell James that she needs to speak to him in private outside.

SB13: This is a medium still shot which shows James as he walks out of the door, Zoe follows behind him with a three- four second gap between them. The camera then blacks out to give the impression to the audience the impression that the location is about to change.

SB14: This is a medium still shot of Zoe sitting down (not the camera will be looking down on Zoe from a higher angle than she is). This shot is being used for the opening shot for the new location which is the woods behind Rotherfield blocks. Zoe is waiting for James to turn up.

SB15: This shot is a tracking shot, where we follow Zoe from a side on angle as she walks towards James who she has spotted walking towards her.

SB16: The shot has now changed to a medium still shot from a side angle aiming at James and Zoe as they meet each other in the middle. This is the shot that will be used to show their conversation that ends up turning into an argument because Zoe has just told James that she’s pregnant.

SB17: This is an over the shoulder shot from Zoe’s shoulder showing a medium shot of James in the background that is walking away from Zoe after she has just told him she’s pregnant; he also turns around at one point to yell abuse at her.

SB18: This shot is a close up shot of Zoe’s face just after James has walked away and yelled at her. She is looking upset but has to change her expression to a happy one when Alex and Dan walk towards her from her back; she turns around as they call out her name.

SB19: This shot starts of as a still medium shot of Zoe walking with Alex and Dan into the distance (town to get something to eat). The shot then becomes a still long shot when Alex, Dana and Zoe get far enough away. The screen then blacks out again to give the impression to the audience that the location is about change again.

SB20: The opening shot for this location is medium still shot facing towards Zoe, Alex and Dan as they are sitting on a bench by the river in Henley on Thames eating food and smoking. Alex and Dan are in conversation in the shot; meanwhile Zoe will be looking down at her shoes, looking upset.

SB21: This shot is a still medium shot from a side on angle at the same location as SB20. Dan is asking why Zoe is looking so upset, she doesn’t tell them about her being pregnant but does mention that her relationship with James is over. This starts a conversation about James between the three of them.

SB22: This shot is a side on medium panning shot that shows Dan, Zoe and Alex getting up from the bench and walking out of the shot to head up to lessons. The screen will once again black out to give the audience the impression that the location is about to change again.

SB23: This is a medium still shot aimed at Zoe who is about to walk into the lesson, Alex and Dan were in front of her and have just entered the room.

SB24: This is an over the shoulder shot following Zoe as she walks into the classroom. All the students (who will be there in the shoot) will look up from what they were doing and look towards Zoe, some of them would be laughing. Some of the students will be looking towards the whiteboard which in turn will make Zoe turn her head towards the white board.

SB25: This is a still close up shot of Zoe’s face where she has a shocked face on from what she has seen on the board.

SB26: This is a close up shot of the white board (that will have horrid words and images drawn on it that relate to Zoe being pregnant). This will give the audience the impression that this is what Zoe was shocked to see.

SB27: This is a panning medium shot that captures Zoe as she backs out of the room and runs out of the camera shot with her hands in her face to hide her emotions which are showing on her face.

SB28: This is a still medium shot that is facing head on towards Zoe as she is smoking a spliff.

SB29: This is a medium still shot of Zoe with her head in her hands from a side on angle.

SB30: This is medium still sill shot looking face on towards Zoe from a high angle. This makes it easier for the audience to see that Zoe is checking her phone for messages she has started receiving.

SB31: This shot is a still close up shot of Zoe’s phone. The reason for this camera shot is to clearly let the audience see the abusive texts that Zoe has received.

SB32: This is a still medium shot that turns into a still longshot as it follows Zoe getting up and walking away from the camera into the distance (out of camera shot). The shot once again blacks out tom indicate a new location is coming next.

SB33: This is a medium shot that isn’t over the shoulder but is following this student who is entering the toilet cubicles. He opens up one of the doors then the shot changes.

SB34: This is a close up shot of Zoe’s feet dangling in mid-air in one of the cubicles which is indicating to the audience that she hung herself.

SB35: This shot starts of as a medium still shot which is being aimed at crowd of students crowding around the toilets shouting for help and talking about what happened.

SB36: The camera shot then pans around from looking at the students gathered outside the toilets until it reaches James standing on his own with a look of guilt and shock on his face (knowing it’s his fault).

Total Amps available when shooting:

Total Amps required for shooting:

HOW WILL YOU DEAL WITH THE EXISTING LIGHT?
I WONT use the existing ambient light during filming because:
□  There is no existing light. I must light this set from scratch.
□  I will turn the existing lights off and light this set from scratch. (Make certain you have already located the switches or breakers and that you have permission to access and turn off during the shoot)
□  I will actively eliminate the existing light by rigging. (This includes such things as covering or tenting windows, removing bulbs or covering light fixtures that cannot be turned off, such as streetlights. Be sure you have both  permission and resources to do this.)

I WILL use the existing ambient light during photography by….
□  balancing my lights to the existing colour ambient temperature
□  correcting the existing ambient lights to TUNGSTEN □   or  DAYLIGHT □
□  using ‘as is’. The temperature of the existing light closely matches what I am already shooting.
□  not correcting anything and allowing the colour temperatures to mix
□  Other:

On the back of this form draw a preliminary set lighting diagram. Be sure to indicate power outlets, practical sources and other items that could be of importance to you in your role as DP on the project. If you are using a generator you should also draw a distribution diagram. Use this to estimate the power you will need at this location by adding up the total amps of all the units you expect to use.
